這部片子比較經典的台詞是I』m counting。（我是數著過來的，指的是母子分別各自數著日子過日，萊拉和艾文都給同一個人說過。

大提琴手萊拉與流行樂隊主唱路易斯在華盛頓廣場一間房頂偶遇，並一見鍾情，卻被萊拉父親棒打鴛鴦。之後，萊拉產下一子，其父偷偷將孩子送往兒童福利院收養，並聲稱孩子已經夭折。
11年後，福利院長大的艾文發現自己與生俱來的音樂敏感與天賦，深信其天賦遺傳自父母，並深信跟隨著音樂可以找到他們。
於是他隻身一人來到紐約，被以榨取街頭賣藝少年為生的「巫師」收留，取藝名「八月迷情」，開始賣藝街頭等待父母。
