關於「愛迪生名言遭篡改」的調查補充

因為一個偶然的機會，看到新語絲上有一位「飛蠓」網友，最近接連發表了
兩篇貼子，《「斷章取義」與「畫蛇添足」》（XYS20071213），《「愛迪生名
言遭篡改」真相繼續調查》（XYS20071226）。所要調查的是一樁小小的網路公
案——愛迪生名言遭篡改。
飛蠓已經查清楚了，所謂「中國教材為什麼要篡改愛迪生的名言」的指控，
起源於2005年7月18日搜狐教育頻道上的一篇未署名的文章，其中關鍵的一段說
——
首先，我要嚴重抗義教育部屢次篡改愛迪生的那句關於「天才」的名言——
我們都以為是「天才那就是1%的靈感加上99%的汗水」。當然，這句話本身並沒
有被偷梁換柱，但教材偏偏每次都漏掉後面那關鍵的一句話：「但那1%的靈感是
最重要的，甚至比那99%的汗水都要重要」。大家可以看到，沒有後面的這句話，
全句的意義就完全改變了。愛迪生當然是個天才，他也是相信天才的（他曾經多
次把福特叫做「天才」）； 他對天才持一種「有條件的承認」的態度，即天才
是最重要的，但天才也需要努力。愛迪生承認努力，但他歸根結底更重視靈感。
而中國的教材上從來只有這第一 句，這等於全面否定靈感的意義。
這篇文章在網上流傳一時, 有人信以為真. 但身居國內的飛蠓對此下了很多
功夫作調查, 而且已經基本查清楚了, 下面兩篇網頁可能是以訛傳訛的原始出處:

不幸的是, 前一個鏈接已經失效. 後面那個鏈接的開始是這樣的:

也就是說, 搜狐的那篇文章中的指控純屬"移花接木", "無中生有". 先把別
人的話安在愛迪生身上，然後指控中國教材篡改名人名言。（當然，不排除這位
佚名作者誤讀了別人的文章，或者也是被其他傳聞所誤導。）
飛蠓的功課已經做得很好了. 但從貼子上看, 飛蠓對所找到的線索好像還有
一點疑問. 這里我幫一把, 提供兩點證實，
其 一："Without the one percent of inspiration, all the
perspiration in the world is only a bucket of sweat."這段話, 確實是美
國的當代女作家Cindi Myers說的話，而不是愛迪生說的. 除了以上網頁, 還可
以在"Dharma Moments"(Danai Chanchaochai, 2006, ISBN: 1857883853) 一書
的前言中得到旁證:
Yes, we do need to work at it sometimes when we』re looking for
answers, but as writer Cindi Myers stylishly points out, 「Without the
one percent of inspiration, all the perspiration in the world is only
a bucket of sweat.」 (Prapai Kraisornkovit, p.17)
其次, Cindi Myers的筆名是Cynthia Sterling. 所以，飛蠓找到的兩個鏈接,
其實都是指向同一人名Sterling. 下面這段簡介來自於Cindi Myers個人網站:
Cindi sold her first novel in 1997. Writing as Cynthia Sterling,
she wrote seven historical romances for Berkley and Kensington before
turning to contemporary fiction. In 2006 her twenty-fifth book will be
published.
也就是說，被佚名作者當作「愛迪生名言「的後半部分，確實應該歸屬於
Cindi Myers。至此，"愛迪生名言遭篡改"這段"公案", 應該可以休矣了吧!
Ⅱ 愛迪生說過「天才是百分之一的靈感加百分之九十九的汗水」，這句話是不是還有後半句，是什麼
後半句 百分之一的靈感比百分之九十九的汗水還要重要，不是愛迪生說的。
是沒做作家Cindi Myers 在一片題目為《靈感與汗水》（inspiration and perspiration）的文章中引用了前半句之後自己做出的感言：「如果沒有那百分之一的靈感，世界上所有的汗水也就僅僅是一桶汗水而已」
